What do the different apprenticeship levels mean and what type of roles would be carried out at the different levels?
- Level 2 Accounts/Finance Assistant Apprenticeship – this is an equivalent qualification to GCSEs and is aimed at those supporting the maintenance of an efficient and accurate finance function within a business. This level deals with the processing of day-to-day business transactions up to an initial trial balance. Typical job titles specified in the Apprenticeship Standard include Accounts administrator, Accounts assistant, Accounts payable clerk, Assistant bookkeeper, Business accounts administrator, Cost accountant assistant, Finance assistant junior, Junior cashier.
- Level 3 Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship – this is equivalent to A-Level qualifications and is aimed at those carrying out routine financial activities and support for businesses and organisations of all types and sizes. It takes apprentices up to a simple Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Account, VAT, and covers the principles of costing in some depth. Typical job titles specified in the Apprenticeship Standard include Accounting technician, Accounts clerk, Assistant accountant, Assistant cashier, Bookkeeper, Finance assistant, Purchase ledger clerk, Sales ledger clerk.
- Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician Apprenticeship – this is regarded as an equivalent to a foundation degree and is aimed at those working as an accountant for an accounting practice or other organisation. It covers the preparation of company accounts and also budgeting, forecasts, variance analysis, and simple investment appraisal. With effect from 1stSeptember 2026, the new AAT syllabus will incorporate into the core papers much of what is currently covered in the optional papers of personal and business taxation, audit & assurance, credit management and cash management. Typical job titles specified in the Apprenticeship Standard include Accountant, Accounts payable and expenses supervisor, Assistant auditor, Assistant financial accountant, Assistant management accountant, Commercial analyst, Finance adviser, Junior analyst.
- Level 7 Accountancy Professional Apprenticeship – This, the highest level of apprenticeship, would be relevant to those whose ambition is to qualify with one of the Chartered Qualifications. Those undertaking this will usually be working as a manager with a view to becoming a senior manager or partner in accounting practice or a senior manager or financial director in industry & commerce or in the public sector. On qualification they will “want the world to be their oyster”!!
