How is an apprenticeship structured?

As their employer, you will be required to provide the apprentice with relevant work experience. This will enable them to meet the requirements of their apprenticeship, whilst helping them to develop their skills and knowledge. In doing so, your business will also benefit from the tasks they will perform.

No matter which level of apprenticeship that is being studied, the apprentice will be required to keep a portfolio of evidence and reflective journals to document the knowledge, skills, and behaviours they have developed during their time at work. These documents will form a major part of their End Point Assessment (EPA). For Levels 2 to 4 of the accounting apprenticeships, the EPA comprises two elements as shown below:

  • Level 2 EPA – AAT in-tray test and structured interview
  • Level 3 EPA – AAT 40 question, multiple choice, knowledge assessment and a professional discussion/interview
  • Level 4 EPA – AAT synoptic exam and a professional discussion or a 2,000 written statement.

The Level 7 apprenticeship and ACA Professional Qualification, which takes between 3.5 – 4 years to complete involves a more in-depth training and assessment. Full details of the ACA apprenticeship can be found here.
